r7a.2xlarge

r7a.2xlarge is AWS's memory-optimized EC2 size at 8 vCPU and 64 GiB. In the name, "r" stands for RAM, "7" is the generation, "a" marks AMD processors and "2xlarge" is the size within the r7a family. It runs on AMD EPYC 9R14 Processor at Up to 3.7 GHz, and AWS introduced it in September 2023. AWS has since shipped r8a and r9g; r8a.2xlarge is the direct replacement at this size, scoring 390,019 CoreMark/s against this instance's 255,700 — roughly 53% more throughput for the same vCPU count. On Rackspace Spot the same shape is mh.vs2.xlarge — 8 vCPU, 64 GiB, matched on both dimensions, about 95% below the US East (N. Virginia) on-demand rate.

When to use it
Good for
  • ●Graph and search workloads with large indexes
  • ●In-memory caches such as Redis and Memcached
  • ●Large JVM heaps and application servers that hold state
  • ●Workloads that fit inside 64 GiB of RAM
  • ●Parallel work that can occupy 8 vCPU
  • ●Network-heavy services — AWS rates this size at Up to 12.5 Gigabit
Avoid if
  • ●Starting a new deployment. r8a.2xlarge is the newer generation at this size.
  • ●The working set needs more than 64 GiB of RAM
  • ●More than 8.00 GiB of RAM per vCPU is needed — that ratio is fixed for the whole family
  • ●Local NVMe or instance-store disk is a hard requirement
  • ●GPU or FPGA acceleration is needed
  • ●CPU-bound work. You are paying for memory this workload will not use.
$444/mo on AWS on-demand against $23/mo on Rackspace Spot for the equivalent — market-priced, not list-priced.
  • Spot sells spare capacity at market prices. It is the cheapest compute on the internet.
  • Prices are set by supply and demand. You pay what the market decides.
  • Compute is delivered as fully managed Kubernetes. All infrastructure is taken care of.
  • Egress costs $0.01/GB after the free allowance. AWS charges $0.09/GB.
