r6g.2xlarge

r6g.2xlarge is AWS's memory-optimized EC2 size at 8 vCPU and 64 GiB. In the name, "r" stands for RAM, "6" is the generation, "g" marks AWS Graviton (ARM) processors and "2xlarge" is the size within the r6g family. It runs on AWS Graviton2 Processor at 2.5 GHz, and AWS introduced it in June 2020. AWS has since shipped r7g, r8g and r9g; r7g.2xlarge is the direct replacement at this size, scoring 196,963 CoreMark/s against this instance's 152,400 — roughly 29% more throughput for the same vCPU count. On Rackspace Spot the same shape is mh.vs2.xlarge — 8 vCPU, 64 GiB, matched on both dimensions, about 92% below the US East (N. Virginia) on-demand rate.

Match qualityx86 substitution

r6g.2xlarge is Graviton (arm64). Rackspace Spot does not have arm64 servers, so mh.vs2.xlarge is an x86_64 substitute with similar specs.

You will need x86 builds of your container images. Most software rebuilds without changes, but anything with compiled native code needs a real rebuild rather than a retag. Speed per core also differs between the two chips, so it is worth testing before deciding how many nodes to run.

When to use it
Good for
  • ●Real-time analytics over hot datasets
  • ●Database instances that keep the working set in RAM
  • ●Graph and search workloads with large indexes
  • ●Workloads that fit inside 64 GiB of RAM
  • ●Parallel work that can occupy 8 vCPU
  • ●Network-heavy services — AWS rates this size at Up to 10 Gigabit
Avoid if
  • ●Starting a new deployment. r7g.2xlarge is the newer generation at this size.
  • ●The working set needs more than 64 GiB of RAM
  • ●You cannot rebuild x86-only binaries or vendor images for aarch64
  • ●CPU-bound work. You are paying for memory this workload will not use.
  • ●More than 8.00 GiB of RAM per vCPU is needed — that ratio is fixed for the whole family
  • ●Local NVMe or instance-store disk is a hard requirement
r6g.2xlarge runs $294/mo on AWS on-demand. The equivalent on Rackspace Spot: $23/mo.
  • Spot sells spare capacity at market prices. It is the cheapest compute on the internet.
  • Prices are set by supply and demand. You pay what the market decides.
  • Compute is delivered as fully managed Kubernetes. All infrastructure is taken care of.
  • Egress costs $0.01/GB after the free allowance. AWS charges $0.09/GB.
