The r5a.large is a memory-optimized AWS EC2 instance: 2 vCPU and 16 GiB of memory, 8.00 GiB per vCPU. In the name, "r" stands for RAM, "5" is the generation, "a" marks AMD processors and "large" is the size within the r5a family. It runs on AMD EPYC 7571 at 2.5 GHz, and AWS introduced it in November 2018. AWS has since shipped r6a, r7a, r8a and r9g; r6a.large is the direct replacement at this size, scoring 42,317 CoreMark/s against this instance's 26,305 — roughly 61% more throughput for the same vCPU count. Rackspace Spot's mh.vs1.medium is a like-for-like substitute at 2 vCPU and 16 GiB, about 90% below the US East (N. Virginia) on-demand rate.
