c9gd.xlarge

c9gd.xlarge is AWS's compute-optimized EC2 size at 4 vCPU and 8 GiB. In the name, "c" stands for compute, "9" is the generation, "gd" marks AWS Graviton (ARM) processors and local NVMe storage and "xlarge" is the size within the c9gd family. It runs on AWS Graviton5 Processor at 3.3 GHz, and AWS introduced it in June 2026. c9gd is the current generation of the c family, so there is no newer AWS size to migrate to. On Rackspace Spot the same shape is ch.vs2.large — 4 vCPU, 8 GiB, matched on both dimensions, about 90% below the US East (N. Virginia) on-demand rate.

Match qualityx86 substitution

c9gd.xlarge is Graviton (arm64). Rackspace Spot does not have arm64 servers, so ch.vs2.large is an x86_64 substitute with similar specs.

You will need x86 builds of your container images. Most software rebuilds without changes, but anything with compiled native code needs a real rebuild rather than a retag. Speed per core also differs between the two chips, so it is worth testing before deciding how many nodes to run.

No local diskc9gd.xlarge comes with 1 × 237 GB NVMe SSD attached to the machine. Spot nodes use network storage only, so that disk doesn't come with it. If you were using it as fast scratch space, you'd move to a persistent volume or object storage, which are slower to read.

When to use it
Good for
  • ●Batch processing and CI/CD runners
  • ●Video encoding and transcoding
  • ●High-traffic web and API serving
  • ●Workloads that fit inside 8 GiB of RAM
  • ●Jobs that want 1 × 237 GB of local NVMe scratch space
  • ●Network-heavy services — AWS rates this size at Up to 15 Gigabit
Avoid if
  • ●The working set needs more than 8 GiB of RAM
  • ●You cannot rebuild x86-only binaries or vendor images for aarch64
  • ●Memory-hungry applications. A memory-optimized family gives more RAM per dollar.
  • ●More than 2.00 GiB of RAM per vCPU is needed — that ratio is fixed for the whole family
  • ●GPU or FPGA acceleration is needed
c9gd.xlarge runs $156/mo on AWS on-demand. The equivalent on Rackspace Spot: $15/mo.
  • Spot sells spare capacity at market prices. It is the cheapest compute on the internet.
  • Prices are set by supply and demand. You pay what the market decides.
  • Compute is delivered as fully managed Kubernetes. All infrastructure is taken care of.
  • Egress costs $0.01/GB after the free allowance. AWS charges $0.09/GB.
