c6in.2xlarge

The c6in.2xlarge is a compute-optimized AWS EC2 instance: 8 vCPU and 16 GiB of memory, 2.00 GiB per vCPU. In the name, "c" stands for compute, "6" is the generation, "in" marks Intel processors and enhanced networking and "2xlarge" is the size within the c6in family. It runs on Intel Xeon 8375C (Ice Lake) at 3.5 GHz, and AWS introduced it in November 2022. AWS has since shipped c7i, c8in and c9g; c7i.2xlarge is the direct replacement at this size, scoring 159,212 CoreMark/s against this instance's 136,026 — roughly 17% more throughput for the same vCPU count. Rackspace Spot's ch.vs2.xlarge is a like-for-like substitute at 8 vCPU and 16 GiB, $0.454/hr on AWS in US East (N. Virginia), from $0.006/hr on Rackspace Spot.

When to use it
Good for
  • ●Scientific modelling and simulation
  • ●Ad serving and real-time bidding
  • ●Game servers and matchmaking
  • ●Workloads that fit inside 16 GiB of RAM
  • ●Parallel work that can occupy 8 vCPU
  • ●Network-heavy services — AWS rates this size at Up to 40 Gigabit
Avoid if
  • ●Starting a new deployment. c7i.2xlarge is the newer generation at this size.
  • ●The working set needs more than 16 GiB of RAM
  • ●Local NVMe or instance-store disk is a hard requirement
  • ●GPU or FPGA acceleration is needed
  • ●Memory-hungry applications. A memory-optimized family gives more RAM per dollar.
  • ●More than 2.00 GiB of RAM per vCPU is needed — that ratio is fixed for the whole family
$331/mo on AWS on-demand against $4/mo on Rackspace Spot for the equivalent — market-priced, not list-priced.
  • Spot sells spare capacity at market prices. It is the cheapest compute on the internet.
  • Prices are set by supply and demand. You pay what the market decides.
  • Compute is delivered as fully managed Kubernetes. All infrastructure is taken care of.
  • Egress costs $0.01/GB after the free allowance. AWS charges $0.09/GB.
