c6id.large

The c6id.large pairs 2 vCPU with 4 GiB of RAM, the 2.00 GiB-per-vCPU ratio that marks a compute-optimized instance. In the name, "c" stands for compute, "6" is the generation, "id" marks Intel processors and local NVMe storage and "large" is the size within the c6id family. It runs on Intel Xeon 8375C (Ice Lake) at 3.5 GHz, and AWS introduced it in May 2022. AWS has since shipped c7i, c8id and c9g; c7i.large is the direct replacement at this size. ch.vs2.medium on Rackspace Spot lines up one-for-one: 2 vCPU and 4 GiB, $0.101/hr on AWS in US East (N. Virginia), from $0.002/hr on Rackspace Spot.

Match qualityNo local disk

c6id.large comes with 1 × 118 GB NVMe SSD attached to the machine. Rackspace Spot nodes use network storage only, so that disk does not come with it.

If you were using the local disk as fast scratch space — temporary files, a local cache, an index — you will need a persistent volume or object storage instead, and both are slower to read. If it was just extra space you never depended on, nothing changes.

When to use it
Good for
  • ●Video encoding and transcoding
  • ●High-traffic web and API serving
  • ●Scientific modelling and simulation
  • ●Workloads that fit inside 4 GiB of RAM
  • ●Jobs that want 1 × 118 GB of local NVMe scratch space
  • ●Network-heavy services — AWS rates this size at Up to 12.5 Gigabit
Avoid if
  • ●Starting a new deployment. c7i.large is the newer generation at this size.
  • ●The working set needs more than 4 GiB of RAM
  • ●GPU or FPGA acceleration is needed
  • ●Memory-hungry applications. A memory-optimized family gives more RAM per dollar.
  • ●More than 2.00 GiB of RAM per vCPU is needed — that ratio is fixed for the whole family
c6id.large runs $74/mo on AWS on-demand. The equivalent on Rackspace Spot: $1/mo.
  • Spot sells spare capacity at market prices. It is the cheapest compute on the internet.
  • Prices are set by supply and demand. You pay what the market decides.
  • Compute is delivered as fully managed Kubernetes. All infrastructure is taken care of.
  • Egress costs $0.01/GB after the free allowance. AWS charges $0.09/GB.
