c6a.large

The c6a.large is a compute-optimized AWS EC2 instance: 2 vCPU and 4 GiB of memory, 2.00 GiB per vCPU. In the name, "c" stands for compute, "6" is the generation, "a" marks AMD processors and "large" is the size within the c6a family. It runs on AMD EPYC 7R13 Processor at 3.6 GHz, and AWS introduced it in February 2022. AWS has since shipped c7a, c8a and c9g; c7a.large is the direct replacement at this size, scoring 67,336 CoreMark/s against this instance's 43,209 — roughly 56% more throughput for the same vCPU count. Rackspace Spot's ch.vs2.medium is a like-for-like substitute at 2 vCPU and 4 GiB, $0.076/hr on AWS in US East (N. Virginia), from $0.002/hr on Rackspace Spot.

When to use it
Good for
  • ●High-traffic web and API serving
  • ●Scientific modelling and simulation
  • ●Ad serving and real-time bidding
  • ●Workloads that fit inside 4 GiB of RAM
  • ●Small, steady services that do not need more than 2 vCPU
  • ●Network-heavy services — AWS rates this size at Up to 12.5 Gigabit
Avoid if
  • ●Starting a new deployment. c7a.large is the newer generation at this size.
  • ●The working set needs more than 4 GiB of RAM
  • ●Local NVMe or instance-store disk is a hard requirement
  • ●GPU or FPGA acceleration is needed
  • ●Memory-hungry applications. A memory-optimized family gives more RAM per dollar.
  • ●More than 2.00 GiB of RAM per vCPU is needed — that ratio is fixed for the whole family
$56/mo on AWS on-demand against $1/mo on Rackspace Spot for the equivalent — market-priced, not list-priced.
  • Spot sells spare capacity at market prices. It is the cheapest compute on the internet.
  • Prices are set by supply and demand. You pay what the market decides.
  • Compute is delivered as fully managed Kubernetes. All infrastructure is taken care of.
  • Egress costs $0.01/GB after the free allowance. AWS charges $0.09/GB.
