c5ad.xlarge

The c5ad.xlarge pairs 4 vCPU with 8 GiB of RAM, the 2.00 GiB-per-vCPU ratio that marks a compute-optimized instance. In the name, "c" stands for compute, "5" is the generation, "ad" marks AMD processors and local NVMe storage and "xlarge" is the size within the c5ad family. It runs on AMD EPYC 7R32 at 3.3 GHz, and AWS introduced it in August 2020. AWS has since shipped c6i, c7i, c8i and c9g; c6i.xlarge is the direct replacement at this size. ch.vs1.large on Rackspace Spot lines up one-for-one: 4 vCPU and 8 GiB, about 88% below the US East (N. Virginia) on-demand rate.

Match qualityNo local disk

c5ad.xlarge comes with 1 × 150 GB NVMe SSD attached to the machine. Rackspace Spot nodes use network storage only, so that disk does not come with it.

If you were using the local disk as fast scratch space — temporary files, a local cache, an index — you will need a persistent volume or object storage instead, and both are slower to read. If it was just extra space you never depended on, nothing changes.

When to use it
Good for
  • ●Scientific modelling and simulation
  • ●Ad serving and real-time bidding
  • ●Game servers and matchmaking
  • ●Workloads that fit inside 8 GiB of RAM
  • ●Jobs that want 1 × 150 GB of local NVMe scratch space
  • ●Network-heavy services — AWS rates this size at Up to 10 Gigabit
Avoid if
  • ●Starting a new deployment. c6i.xlarge is the newer generation at this size.
  • ●The working set needs more than 8 GiB of RAM
  • ●GPU or FPGA acceleration is needed
  • ●Memory-hungry applications. A memory-optimized family gives more RAM per dollar.
  • ●More than 2.00 GiB of RAM per vCPU is needed — that ratio is fixed for the whole family
Stop overpaying AWS. This compute costs $126/mo on AWS vs $15/mo on Rackspace Spot.
  • Spot sells spare capacity at market prices. It is the cheapest compute on the internet.
  • Prices are set by supply and demand. You pay what the market decides.
  • Compute is delivered as fully managed Kubernetes. All infrastructure is taken care of.
  • Egress costs $0.01/GB after the free allowance. AWS charges $0.09/GB.
