c5a.large

The c5a.large is a compute-optimized AWS EC2 instance: 2 vCPU and 4 GiB of memory, 2.00 GiB per vCPU. In the name, "c" stands for compute, "5" is the generation, "a" marks AMD processors and "large" is the size within the c5a family. It runs on AMD EPYC 7R32 at 3.3 GHz, and AWS introduced it in June 2020. AWS has since shipped c6a, c7a, c8a and c9g; c6a.large is the direct replacement at this size, scoring 43,209 CoreMark/s against this instance's 37,030 — roughly 17% more throughput for the same vCPU count. Rackspace Spot's ch.vs1.medium is a like-for-like substitute at 2 vCPU and 4 GiB, $0.077/hr on AWS in US East (N. Virginia), from $0.002/hr on Rackspace Spot.

When to use it
Good for
  • ●Ad serving and real-time bidding
  • ●Game servers and matchmaking
  • ●Batch processing and CI/CD runners
  • ●Workloads that fit inside 4 GiB of RAM
  • ●Small, steady services that do not need more than 2 vCPU
  • ●Network-heavy services — AWS rates this size at Up to 10 Gigabit
Avoid if
  • ●Starting a new deployment. c6a.large is the newer generation at this size.
  • ●The working set needs more than 4 GiB of RAM
  • ●GPU or FPGA acceleration is needed
  • ●Memory-hungry applications. A memory-optimized family gives more RAM per dollar.
  • ●More than 2.00 GiB of RAM per vCPU is needed — that ratio is fixed for the whole family
  • ●Local NVMe or instance-store disk is a hard requirement
Stop overpaying AWS. This compute costs $56/mo on AWS vs $1/mo on Rackspace Spot.
  • Spot sells spare capacity at market prices. It is the cheapest compute on the internet.
  • Prices are set by supply and demand. You pay what the market decides.
  • Compute is delivered as fully managed Kubernetes. All infrastructure is taken care of.
  • Egress costs $0.01/GB after the free allowance. AWS charges $0.09/GB.
